What are nutrients?

Nutrients are the nourishing substances in food that provide water, energy, or calories, promote the growth and maintenance of the human body, and regulate body processes.

In other words, nutrients are the nourishing substances in food that give us water, energy, and building materials, allow our body to grow and develop, maintain the health of our body, and keep us feeling healthy.

The Six Groups of Nutrients

Nutrients provide water and energy, promote growth, development, and maintenance of the body, and regulate body processes.

The nutrients help regulate numerous processes in our body, for example, the heart-beating and the digestion of food in the stomach. Nutrients include carbohydrates, fats, protein, water, minerals, and vitamins. The nutrients are grouped into six main groups:

The six groups of nutrients are further divided into two major categories: macronutrients and micronutrients.
